ABOUT

Hi, I’m Antonella

Yoga has been part of my life for 28 years. I have been teaching for 10 years.

At the age of 43, I decided to leave my career in the clothing Industry.

I was very blessed to have had a fantastic career, and to have met colourful people while travelling to many places during this time.

However, there has always been a part of me, a nagging feeling that there was something more.

In 2021 I made the decision to focus on Yoga Teaching Only and that’s when I left my job and embarked on this magnificent spiritual journey.

My experience and love of yoga has led me to be of service to others and teach playfully by incorporating space in body, breath and mind.

I have completed 500YTT at Living Yoga JHB and One Yoga Thailand.

I am the owner of My Space Yoga studio in JHB.

I specialise in unique Vinyasa flow, Hatha Yoga focus on Breath, Yin Yoga, Yoga Nidra and many techniques of Meditation, as well as a wide knowledge of philosophy, the chakras and Pranayama.

Welcome to My Space Yoga, creating conscious space.

I look forward to meeting you, much love.

Starting yoga for the first time? You probably have a few questions—like what to wear, what to bring, and how to get ready. Don’t worry!

Below is everything you need to know.

Online vs. Studio

If you’re new to yoga, it’s best to head to a studio for in-person instruction as you get started with your practice. Instructors can provide personalized feedback on form and offer modification suggestions for different poses that simply aren’t possible to get through most online or video-based platforms.

If you opt for online, make sure that the lighting is good and you are positioned in a way that the instructor can see you—full-length view.

What to Wear

You definitely need to get decked out in designer yoga gear before heading to class—Just kidding! Keep it simple and wear clothes that are comfortable and easy to move in.

Shoes - Yoga is usually done barefoot. If you prefer, you can wear non-slip yoga socks for grip and comfort.

Pants - You don’t need special yoga pants for your first class—any comfortable, stretchy exercise pants or shorts will do. Avoid non-stretchy clothes like jeans. After a few classes, you might want to invest in yoga-specific leggings or shorts based on your comfort and style preferences.

Tops - A fitted shirt works best for yoga—baggy tops tend to fall over your head when you bend. Sleeveless tops are great for easy movement. Choose a sports bra with enough support, especially for faster-paced classes like vinyasa.

What to Bring

Mat - If it’s your first class, don’t worry about bringing a mat—most studios rent them for a small fee. Once you’re practicing regularly, it’s worth investing in a high-quality mat with good grip and support.

Towel - If you tend to sweat a lot, bring a hand or gym towel.

Props - If you’re practicing at a studio, there’s no need to bring your own props—blocks, straps, and blankets are usually provided. If the teacher doesn’t mention them, it’s a good idea to grab a block and strap just in case.

How to Prepare

The beauty of yoga is that it requires very little other than your own body. Preparation is simple, but if you're new, it's always a good idea to get to class a little early to help acclimate yourself to the environment and introduce yourself to the instructor. Here are a few other tips to keep in mind:

Avoid Heavy Meals Prior to Class

Don’t eat a heavy meal right before you do yoga. When you start moving, everything gets churned up and you may start to feel sick if your stomach is too full. You can have a juice or a piece of fruit if you have to. It is better to have an empty stomach—try not to eat 2 hours before any class.

Touch Base With the Instructor

If you're completely new to yoga, do let the instructor know before class starts. The instructor will then know to keep an eye on you throughout class and to offer additional cueing for poses as needed.
It's also important to let your instructor know if you have any injuries or are pregnant, and how you feel about receiving hands-on corrections. All of this information gives the instructor the opportunity to make your first class as comfortable and accessible as possible.

Class Etiquette

Silence Your Phone - Turn it off before class starts. No texting or calls during practice.

Arrive Early - Get there 10 minutes early. Don’t join if you’re more than 10 minutes late.

Respect Mat Space - Avoid stepping on others’ mats. In crowded classes, place your mat mindfully and be willing to shift if needed.

Bathroom Breaks - Go during resting poses like child’s pose—not during peak moments or final relaxation.

Practice Tips

1. Breathe & Stay Present

Your first class may feel overwhelming—new moves, new words, new space. Just focus on your breath and yourself. It gets easier!

2. Watch Alignment

Follow your teacher’s form closely. Good alignment helps prevent injury and improves your practice.

3. Look & Listen

It’s okay to glance around, but focus on your teacher’s cues. Listening helps with the smaller adjustments that really matter.

4. Stay Positive

Don’t stress if you’re corrected—it’s part of learning. Avoid comparing yourself to others. Laugh, smile, and enjoy the process.

5. Trust Your Body

Listen to your body. There’s no rush. Know the difference between challenge and pain, and respect your limits.

6. Ask Questions

Never hesitate to ask your teacher for help—before or after class.

Creating Consciousness

Offering a variety of yoga styles to suit all levels, from beginners to advanced. With over 20 years of yoga practice, Antonella has embraced many styles, staying deeply connected to the art of yoga as a source of happiness and calm.

I attended a yoga class on Wednesday, and it was a beautiful experience. Antonella is warm, welcoming and very skilled at guiding the class. She took the time to explain each movement, offered gentle corrections and made sure everyone felt comfortable- whether you a beginner or more experienced. The studio itself is calm and filled with positive energy. I can’t recommend this studio enough- if you are looking for a place to unwind, stretch and truly connect
